Being the second part of the Geology of the Voyage of the Beagle, under the command of Capt. Fitzroy, R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836 . London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1844. 8 o (221 x 142 mm.). 24-page publishers' catalogue dated January 1844 at end. Folding lithographic map as frontispiece and wood-engravings in the text. Original blue cloth, decorated in blind, spine with title and price in gilt, uncut (spine very slightly sunned and with some minor wear at ends). Provenance : Perry W. Gilbert (pencil signature dated January 3, 1952 on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. "The three parts of Darwin's geological results of the Beagle voyage were separately published over a period of five years, but they were intended, and described on the title pages, as parts of one work" (Freeman). This, the second part, included observations of Australia and the Cape of Good Hope. Darwin began writing it shortly after moving into Down House in September 1842, and felt frustrated by the impossibility of expressing the romance of places such as Galapagos, St. Helena, St. Jago and Ascension in a purely scientific work. As he eventually complained to Lyell, 'it cost me 18 months!!! ' and although retailing at only 10/6, compared with 15s for the first part, the poor sales convinced him that geologists did not actually read each other's books (see Desmond and Moore, ch. 21, p. 337). The Galapagos appear in a woodblock illustration on H1v (p.98). Freeman 272; Norman 587.
