DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882). Autograph letter signed ('Ch. Darwin') to Hugh Falconer, Down, Bromley, Kent, 8 March [1857], one page, 8vo , on a bifolium (very short tears at horizontal fold). Darwin writes to a scientific correspondent to thank him for information he has provided on 'Thibet Dogs', and suggests that if he could add a few details 'the case probably would be a very valuable & interesting one for me, as I know of nothing parallel to it'; a postscript warmly expresses Darwin's delight in 'a chat with you'. Hugh Falconer (1808-1865) had been superintendent of the botanic garden in Saharanpur, 1832-42, and in Calcutta from 1848 until his return to England in 1855; he also supervised the arrangement of Indian fossils for the British Museum in 1844. He and Darwin corresponded on Indian and paleological subjects with great cordiality, despite differences of opinion, between March 1846 and Falconer's death; more than 20 letters are known on each side.
