DAPPER, Olfert (1636-89). Umbständliche und Eigentliche Beschreibung von Africa. Translated into German by F. von Zesen. Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs 1670-1671. 2 parts in one volume, 2 o (313 x 198 mm). Title to part one printed in red and black, engraved additional title, 14 engraved folding maps and 29 engraved folding plates and 56 engraved illustrations in text. (Without portrait and dedication as often, a few slight tears, some occasional light marginal dampstaining, light browning and staining.) Late 18th-century calf. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. The work is one of the most authoritative 17th-century accounts on Africa published in German. Dapper never travelled to Africa but used reports by Jesuit missionaries and other explorers. The fine plates include views of Algiers, Benin, Cairo, Cap Town, La Valetta, Marrakech, St. Helena, Tangier, Tripoli, Tunis, as well as, animals and plants. Like most copies this is without the engraved portrait and dedication, both probably inserted later. See Blackmer 450; Cox I, 361.
