The Daniells, an uncle-nephew team of British artists, departed for the Far East in the spring of 1785. They traveled to and depicted Madeira, the Cape of Good Hope, Java, Macao, Canton and Calcutta. Approximately half of the images capture life in China in the late 18th century, and text accounts include ethnographic notes, geographical descriptions, and highlights of the sea journey such as crossing the international date line, a man overboard, the albatross, and other incidents.
