DAN, Pierre. Le Tresor des Merveilles de la maison royale de Fontainbleau. Paris: Sebastien Camoisy, 1642. 2° (333 x 243mm.). Title in red and black with engraved vignette, 9 full-page engraved illustrations. (Occasional light marginal staining.) Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt (joints slightly split). Provenance : Michael Begon (armorial bookplate, dated 1702); Benedictine Monastery of St. Michael of the Congregation of St. Maur (various inscriptions, one dated 1714). FIRST EDITION of the earliest book on the Château of Fontainbleau. It is particularly useful as a contemporary description of the building as it was before the massive 18th- and 19th-century alterations, but after the alterations started by François I in 1528. Eight of the illustrations are of the fountains designed by Tommaso Francini the ninth is a bird's-eye-view of the building and gardens.
