DALI, Salvador (1904-1989). La Femme visible . Paris: Éditions Surréalistes, 1930.
DALI, Salvador (1904-1989). La Femme visible . Paris: Éditions Surréalistes, 1930. Quarto (280 x 220 mm). EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with, bound-in, three leaves of manuscript by Dali with drawings and sketches, pencil on various papers, the sheets 224-280 x 175-205 mm. (One leaf repaired at the edges.) Engraved frontispiece and seven plates. (Edges lightly yellowed, as often, offsetting from the frontispiece onto the title page.) 20th-century green leather, preserving the original reflective card cover. FIRST EDITION OF DALI'S FIRST SURREALIST BOOK. A UNIQUE COPY WITH THREE LEAVES OF DALI MANUSCRIPT AND DRAWINGS . One of these shows a fine pencil drawing with an anamorphic skull, probably ca. 1935, with thoughts sketched in the margin under the title 'atmosferic - animals - tragédie - "espectacle surréaliste"'; here, for example, Dali writes: 'derrière les deux grands et bien connus simulacres, des atavismes crépusculaires, a lieu une réunion de mots, visiblement influencés par les idées des surréalistes'; here also Dali mentions one of his major themes, filicide: 'l'espectacle signifie le "féminin" de Saturne dévoreur [de] ses fils, et également celui de Isaac, Guillaume Tell...' Another manuscript found here shows a number of small sketches, one of these incorporating a crutch -- an important motif in Dali's work. This manuscript records Dali's idea for the creation of a 'sociétée secrète dans le sein du Surréalisme', and includes the sketch for a surrealist emblem, and a list of assorted ideas: a surrealist advertising poster, surrealist postcards, a course of surrealist conferences '15 fr la place'. La femme visible is one of Dali's most celebrated works: it is his manifesto for the paranoiac-critical method which he introduces here, and it is the work which marked both his entry into the Surrealist movement, and the beginning of his literary career. Copy 23 of 20 on Holland paper, after 10 on Japan, from an edition of 204 copies only. Eros invaincu 106; Launay 288; Michler-Löpsinger 4.
