DAI BENXIAO (1621-after 1691) Visiting a Retreat Deep in the Misty Mountain Hanging scroll, ink on paper, 19¾ x 49½in. (49.2 x 125.7cm.) Inscribed by the artist: "[Among the artists who used] this kind of brushwork in the Yuan Dynasty were Zhao Shanchang (Zhao Yuan, ?-1372), and Chen Qiushui (CHen Ruyan, 14th century), in the early Ming dynasty were Wang Mengduan (Wang Fu, 1362-14160, and Xu Youwen (Xu Fan, 14th century). They all followed the style of Huang He Shan Qiao (Wang Meng, 1308-1385). At the end of the Yuan dynasty [his style] became the most popular. More than ten artists followed it; even the Lu Tianyou (Lu Guan, 14th century) and Guo Tianxi (Guo Bian, 1301-1355) were similar to his. This kind of brushwork is different from that of Guo Xi 911th century). Many artists captured this, and those artists who convey spaciousness and elegance all begin with it."
