Chief Gaul (1840-1895) was an accomplished warrior who became war chief of the Lakota by his early twenties. Orphaned, Sitting Bull adopted him as a younger brother. The two fought together during many battles including the Battle of Little Big Horn. Gaul fled to Canada with him but returned his people to America after his relationship with Sitting Bull dissolved. He assimilated, converted to Christianity, and became a farmer.
