CUSTER, GEORGE ARMSTRONG, Major General. Cabinet photograph inscribed and signed ("G.A. Custer") by John A. Scholten of St. Louis, Missouri (imprint on verso), n.p., n.d. [about 24 January 1872]. 66 x 108 mm. (6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in.) including mount. Inscribed in an unknown early hand on back: "Property Custer Estate" and (in pencil) "Custer - signed, the civilian." Depicting, within an oval frame, Custer in civilian dress with flowing hair and moustache. Boldly inscribed in lower portion: "Your affectionate Brother G. A. Custer July 1st 1872." D. Mark Katz, Custer in Photographs, 1985, K-110v (illustrated). A VERY RARE CABINET PORTRAIT INSCRIBED TO HIS BROTHER TOM CUSTER, KILLED WITH HIM AT LITTLE BIG-HORN Cabinet photographs are generally uncommon, when inscribed they are of greatest rarity. The present photograph is doubly remarkable for its provenance, having been inscribed by Custer to his brother Tom a year before he was ordered to reform the 7th Cavalry and assigned to the troubled Dakota territory. His younger brother, Captain Tom Custer was part of his command and both were killed (allegedly by the famed Sioux Chief Rain-in-the Face) when Custer's force was surrounded by hostile Sioux in 25 June 1876. Provenance : Dr. Lawrence A. Frost -- Profiles in History, Catalogue 7, no. 64 (illustrated on cover).
