London: by Stephen Coachman and others, [1787]-1793-1982. 181 bound volumes and 23 quarterly issues: Volumes I-CLXXXIV, and 2 index volumes and volume of Dedications, 8° (not uniform). OVER 10,000 ENGRAVED AND LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, MAINLY COLOURED BY HAND, including several folding. (Some leaves slightly spotted.) Volumes I-LXIX and one index in contemporary green and brown half calf (some volumes rubbed, a few joints split), vols. LXX-CII in calf and half-calf (not uniform, some worn, a few repaired), vols. CIII-CLXXVIII in blue cloth, (some spines faded), the remainder in original wrappers; sold as a periodical not subject to return. A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF ONE OF THE OLDEST SCIENTIFIC PERIODICALS WITH COLOURED ILLUSTRATIONS, showing the complete development of the magazine from its inception in 1787. The first 13 volumes were edited by William Curtis after which it was taken over by John Sims until 1826. Other notable editors include Wiliam Jackson Hooker, Joseph Dalton Hooker Thiselton-Dyer, Prain, Ramsbottom, Stapf and Hill. The majority of plates up to volume 43 are by Sydenham Edwards; other distiguished artists include James Sowerby John Curtis W. Jackson Hooker, W.H. Fitch, Matilda Smith and Lillian Snelling. "A complete set is a most valued and prized possession . . . Not only are many of the plates beautiful in themselves, but the volumes are an endless treasure house of wonderful plants."
