London: Stephen Couchman for the Proprietors, 1805. - General Indexes to the Plants contained in the first forty-two volumes for the botanical Magazine . London; Stephen Couchman for Sherwood, Neely, & Jones, 1816. Volumes 1-44 plus two index volumes, bound in 16 volumes, 8 o (232 x 140 mm). Letterpress title-pages (lacking for parts 2, 3, 6, 8, 14, 39, and 44), letterpress indicies (lacking for parts 3 and 44). Engraved portrait of William Curtis and approximately 1900 hand-colored engraved plates (of 1941), some folding. (Occasional spotting or staining.) 19th-century half calf, marbled boards (spines worn, rubbed, one volume with upper cover detached, a few spines perished, some hinges starting or broken). A RUN OF ONE OF THE OLDEST SCIENTIFIC PERIODICALS OF ITS KIND. William Curtis had witnessed from personal experience the fact that his clients refused to buy folio pictures of unassuming plants, but he felt they would subscribe to an octavo work illustrating the showy plants that filled their gardens. From this premise was born the Botanical Magazine in February 1787. It proved to be immediately successful, and the early volumes were quickly reissued. William Curtis edited the work until his death in 1799 (vols. 1-13) and the editorship of the subsequent volumes in this set was continued in turn by John Sims (1749-1831) and William Jackson Hooker. The plates were worked on by many of the most prominent botanical artists of the day, notably John Curtis Sydenham Edwards, James Sowerby and William Hooker. The magazine continued throughout the 19th century, and despite many changes of proprietors, editors, artists, and printing methods, throughout the 20th century as well. Sold as a periodical not subject to return. Blunt (1994), pp.211-217; Great Flower Books , pp.156-7; Nissen BBI 2350; Stafleu & Cowan 1290. (44)
