Gallery director Tanya Kiang said Doyle produced some of the finest photographs in Ireland, 'finding elegiac and poetic moments in everyday gestures of life, depicting both ordinary and well-known people with the same gentle, respectful approach'. Lots 189-193 in this sale comprise a collection of photographs - mostly signed by Doyle - including some of his best-known images of the Aran Islands and its inhabitants. Doyle's passion for photography began at an early age but it was not until he won the Daily Telegraph Magazine Photographer of the Year Award in London, in 1967 for his Aran Islands series that he took up freelance photography as a fulltime career. His books include The Aran Islands: Another World (1999), Images of Dublin: A Time Remembered (2001) and Bill Doyle's Ireland (2007). Some of the examples in lots 189-193 were included in a major exhibition titled 'Currach Folk' in the National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia. The 31 photographs shown captured the hardship, dignity and humanity of the islanders whose lives were shaped by the sea. Other shows were held in Poland, Germany, Japan, the UK and US, and in The Moderns exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
