CULPEPER, Nicholas. Culpeper's English Physician; and Complete Herbal . Edited and expanded by Ebenezer Sibly (1751- ca 1800). London: Printed for the Author, [1794?]. 2 volumes, 4 o (262 x 210 mm). Printed on a mixture of blue and cream paper. Portrait frontispiece and 40 (of 42) plates, comprising 29 hand-colored engravings of plants and 11 sepia-printed anatomical engravings (small repaired tear to frontispiece, plates in volume one with a few small stains to images, in volume two 4 plates with repaired marginal tears some crossing the image border, the plate of the Human Skeleton with outer margin renewed). (Lacking title to second volume.) Contemporary blue half polished calf, marbled boards (rubbed, some wear to extremities). Second edition. "The date is derived from the dedication which is dated the year of Masonry 5798, which, according to Miss Henrey, corresponds to 1794" ( Cleveland Collections ). In Wellcome, there is again no second title present; the works were often bound together. Other copies are not fully hand-colored or have the anatomical plates printed in black.
