CUBA--CHINESE LABOR] Group of six documents pertaining to a Chinese immigrant (i.e. a "colono") named Aky Achou (Alejo Sanchez after his baptism). Four documents in manuscript, two printed and accomplished by hand show the progress of Sanchez from indentured servitude to a legal resident of Cuba, over the period December 1852 to October 1863. The documents bear various government stamps and a variety of signatures, including one (on the first) in Chinese. Some browning and toning, but overall in an excellent state of preservation. A remarkable set of documents, recording the odyssey of a man from the village of Lamtao in China, through eight years of indentured servitude at a sugar refinery. through baptism to legal residence, ultimately becoming a Spanish subject.
