CUBA and HISPANIOLA - FORLANI, PAOLO ( fl .1560-71).
CUBA and HISPANIOLA - FORLANI, PAOLO ( fl .1560-71). L'Isola Cuba è piu sette[n]tio[n]al della Spagnola. Venice: Paolo Forlani, 1564. Engraved map of Cuba by Paolo Forlani, 175 x 247mm. A rare first state of this very important map of Cuba. The finely engraved image also embraces Jamaica and part of Hispaniola. The lower-left corner is adorned with a title cartouche within a cabled border, and a compass rose. It is derived from Giacomo Gastaldi's map of the island included as one of the thirty-four new maps that he included in his Ptolemy of 1548. Forlani printed two later states, and it was copied by Ferrando Bertelli in 1566. Karrow no.1, Tooley:1939 no. 89, Woodward:1990 no.29.02, watermark similar to Woodward:1996 207. FORLANI, PAOLO( fl. 1560-71). L'Isola Spagnola una delle prime che Colombo. Venice: Paolo Forlani, 1564. Engraved map of Hispaniola by Paolo Forlani, 188 x 255mm. The rare first state example of Forlani's very important map of Hispaniola. Stylistically similar to its companion above, it captures the dramatic topography of the island and is adorned with a compass rose and a title cartouche with a cabled border. It also shares the same antecedent as the map of Cuba, and Forlani similarly printed two subsequent states, which were also copied by Bertelli two years later. Karrow no.2, Tooley:1939 no.84, Woodward:1990 no.30. (2)
