Beschreibung:

CRUIKSHANK, GEORGE and ROBERT London Characters . London: Joseph Robins, 1827. Apparently the first edition in book form [but likely the second issue circa 1906, using the plates of the original, which had a facsimile binding and title leaf]. Printed boards in a three-quarters green morocco pull-off case. 6 1/8 x 3/4 inches (15.5 x 10 cm); title, 24 hand-colored engraved plates, each with protective tissue. Slipcase a bit faded, front board at one point detached but now rehinged with archival tissue, plates generally fresh. With the bookplate of Edward Ludlow Parker. According to Cohn, this issue was put together about 1906 from loose plates in the Trueman collection (with, in some instances, facsimile plates struck from the original copper plates). It is a charming suite of engravings that includes many images of London trades (the Tax Gatherer, Sailor's Lass, Fishmonger, Barber etc., all memorably depicted. The true first issue is rare, this later version at the very least uncommon. Cohn 182. Sold with a copy of Cruikshank's Comic Alphabet in leporello form, a fine copy in box, finely hand-colored, apparently an early 20th century restrike. C Collection from the Estate of Robert Rieber
