CRÈVECOEUR, Michel Guillaume St. Jean de (1735-1813). Lettres d'un Cultivateur Américain...Traduites de l'Anglois . Paris: Cuchet 1787.
CRÈVECOEUR, Michel Guillaume St. Jean de (1735-1813). Lettres d'un Cultivateur Américain...Traduites de l'Anglois . Paris: Cuchet 1787. 3 volumes, 8° (196 x 125 mm). Engraved title-pages. 5 engraved folding maps, 4 engraved plates. Contemporary tan mottled calf, brown and green morocco lettering pieces, edges red (some light chipping and loss to spines and boards, some light wear). Provenance : A few leaves with discreet marginal notes in pencil vol.I. Second French edition, the “best French edition – and most complete of all editions” (Howes). “This edition is greatly enlarged, the whole of the third volume being added. This translation was made by the author himself. The work is highly recommended in two letters, by way of introduction, from M. de Lacretelle” (Sabin). Crévecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmer (first published in English in 1782) was one of the first works which explained life in the American frontier to Europeans; rather than focusing on regional differences of each colony, it presented a unified American identity to a European audience. Howes C-883; Sabin 17495.
