CRESCENTIIS, PETRUS DE. Vom Ackerbaw, Erdtwüchern und Bauwleüten. Von natur, art, gebrauch und nutzbarkeit aller gewechsz, Früchten, Thyeren...New getruckt. Strassburg: Johann Knobloch 1531. Collation : [a]4 b-z6 A-G6 H8. 186 leaves, with foliation and signatures. Type: 98G (text). 50 lines and headline. Title within woodcut border of boys with monkeys, blank shield at bottom, variously attributed to Urs Graf Hans Wechtlin or Hans Baldung Grien, full-page woodcut of the expulsion from Eden on [a]4v, approximately 217 small text woodcuts (including repeats) of genre scenes and plants, numerous nine-line and smaller woodcut fraktur or white-on-black historiated initials. Title soiled, repairs to gutters of title-leaf and [a]4, a bit of marginal worming, one or two short marginal tears, occasional light foxing or minor discoloration, marginal dampstaining . Fifth edition in German of Pier de' Crescenzi's popular Opus ruralium commodorum , first printed in 1471 and requently reprinted. The text "relates to the multitudinous problems of husbandry and agriculture incident to the management of a great estate...[and] includes sections on hunting and fishing, the making of wine, and the diseases of animals, as well as on the cultivation of cereals, trees and plants" (Stillwell IScience, IV 615). Books 5 and 6 contain a discussion of the medicinal uses of plants and fruits. The woodcuts are reprints from the preceding edition of 1518, the woodcuts of rural activities being reverse cuts of those from earlier illustrated editions, while most of the plant woodcuts are derived from the cuts used in Johann and Conrad Hist's edition of the Herbarius Latinus (1484) [cf. lot 24] (two or three slightly larger plant cuts having previously been used in the Prüss-Beck Hortus Sanitatis series. The block for the title border was slightly cut away at top for this edition (see also lot 38). Nissen BBI 426; Ahumada 36; not in Adams or BM/STC. [ Bound before :] OROSIUS, PAULUS. (12 1/16 x 7 7/8 in.), contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, the covers tooled to a panel design with two different foliage and floral roll-tools and large and smaller rosettes, two brass clasps, authors' names ink-lettered in an early hand on upper cover and upper and lower edges, rubbed, somewhat soiled, small hole to upper compartment of spine. Provenance : "Ex dono Reverendi H. Walseri pro tempore parochi in Titoning, die cenerum, anno 1610", inscription on front pastedown; Johann Georg Klagensreitter, inscription on first title; "Anno domini 31 emptus per me Paulum prespiterum Sancti Zenonis pro 4 fl. viij d. weyss Ambo libri empti et collegari iussi per me Paulum eundem pro xj fl. et xxj. d. anno domini 39 ad fratrum et librarie commodum", ownership inscription on verso of final leaf of second work; Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate; the present owner.
