CRÉBILLON, Prosper Jolyot, Sieur de (1674-1762). Oeuvres . Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1750. 2 volumes, 4 o (253 x 191 mm). Engraved frontispiece, vignette on titles, headpiece and initial by Le Bas after Boucher, engraved portrait of the author by Balechou after Aved, woodcut ornaments. Contemporary Parisian red morocco gilt, triple-fillet border, acorn tools at the corners, ARMS OF LORD ALBEMARLE ensigned with the Garter in the center of the sides, edges gilt and marbled, marbled endpapers; slipcase. Provenance : Lord Albemarle (1702-1754, bindings; presentation inscription); Mortimer Schiff (bookplate; his sale Sotheby's London, 5 July 1939, lot 739); Maj. John Roland Abbey (bookplate, his sale Sotheby's London, 22 June 1965, lot 237). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CRÉBILLON TO LORD ALBEMARLE on the verso of the front free endpaper in vol. 1: "Á Son Excellence Son Excellence Milord d'Albemarle ambassadeur de sa Majesté Britannique par son tret humble et tres obeissant seraiteur(?) Crébillon." Lord Albemarle was sent as ambassador extraordinary to Paris in 1748. Loosely inserted is a contemporary manuscript note to the printer regarding the wording of the subscription to the epistle "Au Roi." Cohen-de Ricci 263.
