An amusing collection of correspondence, including early letters to his frequent co-star Gertrude Lawrence and this waspish letter to screenwriter Allen Vincent regarding his most recent play: "I have based the character that Margalo Gillmore plays on you. Not outwardly, oh no, I am far too clever for that—she plays a well-bred Bostonian which you could never be. But character-wise I have held a mirror up to you, which no one has ever before dared to do, and the part emerges as an absolute BITCH." See illustration.
