(Midshipman) H. Cenas, U.S. Frigate Congress , care U.S. Consul, Brazil Squadron, Rio Janeiro', red 'N.York Br. Pkt. Paid' exchange backstamp and London transit, red ms. '40' credit, beautiful bold strike of blue 'U.S. Navy Agents Office, Rio de Janeiro' double oval forwarder's handstamp, Rio de Janeiro backstamps, neat ms. docketing, according to the Feb. 3rd, 1861 ms. docketing on the front, the letter was written one day prior to Confederate statehood for Louisiana, the February 7th New Orleans postmark confirms Confederate usage of the United States stamps, it should be noted that the addressee was a member of the Union's naval force stationed in South America, and that the Congress was subsequently sunk by a Confederate ironclad man-of-war, VERY FINE AND VERY COLORFUL COVER, AN OUTSTANDING CIVIL WAR USAGE WITH A VERY RARE NAVAL AGENT FORWARDER MARKING, ILLUSTRATING THE THIRTY-THREE CENTS RATE VIA FRENCH MAIL
