'Calliope' to Bombay, with long manuscript letter giving good reference to the then current situation, "...No reinforcements have arrived...till these reinforcements do arrive nothing will be attempted & the belief gains ground that, with all the force we shall be able to muster, it will be impossible to make an attack on Pekin...Captain Elliot went up to Canton this morning in the 'Atlanta' steamer accompanied by H.M.S. 'Hyacinth' & 'Algerine' for the purpose, we believe, of insisting on the payment indemnification for the pillage of the factories as also if possible to remove any obstacles in the way of workmen and materials in Hong Kong... Our chance of being able to carry on any trade before all the differences between the two Countries have been settled gets worse and worse - The Colony is utterly ruined..." , vertical filing crease and a little soiled, nevertheless an interesting historical record
