Beschreibung:

cover 1839 (Dec.) entire letter from Spalding to Milnthorpe containing two enclosures which refer to scientific experiments, the reverse showing good strike of the black circular undated "SPALDING" and the address panel with manuscript "4" , the main letter notes "Under the protection of our new 'fourpenny bit' postage, I will give you two enclosures" but realising that the weight was over half an ounce the sender cut blank portions of the letter and enclosures away, noting on the reverse of one enclosure "I find my letter above the ½ ounce, and therefore curtail it with the scissors, to bring the weight down" ; flap with tear but otherwise fine.
