brown leather, size 40 jacket with functional zipper and two front pockets. Left breast embossed with wings and a bomb. Left breast with cloth insignia of stylized yellow eagle superimposed upon a grey cloud and blue sky background with 19 silver bombs and red lightning bolt. Verso with white lettering and black outlined Cottontails. Disc image of a cottontail rabbit with red gloves astride a yellow bomb. Immediately below are 25 painted red bombs. Right shoulder with red, white and blue embossed flag. Left shoulder with yellow eagle and bomb with number 15. Interior label reads Type A-2/Werber Sportswear Co./Newburgh, N.Y. Interior with glazed cotton liner. PLUS Cubbins, William R. The War of the Cotton-Tails Memoirs of a WWII Bomber Pilot. Chapel Hill (NC): Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 1989. The Cottontails were members of the 465th Bombardment Group of B-24s whose namesake came from the distinctive white rudders on their aircraft. This particular unit of the 15th Air Force entered combat in May 5, 1944, and its last mission was on April 26, 1945. The four primary missions of this group were to first destroy the German Air Force in the air and on the ground; second, to destroy German airplane manufacturing plants and refineries; third, to attack Italian communication; and fourth, to weaken the German position in the Balkans. This group flew 191 missions over southern Europe, shot down 97 German aircraft and dropped 10,528 tons of bombs. Condition: All insignia are with expected worn condition, the most weathered insignia being the left eagle insignia. Breast insignia with lighting bolt is ca 25% severed from the jacket. The lining is partially detached from the jacket, especially in the neck and shoulder regions.
