Picturesque Representations of The Dress and Manners of the Austrians by William Alexander Thomas McLean, watermarked 1828. With 50 hand-colored engravings. A series introducing the peoples and character of the far-flung nations to a British readership at the center of Empire. A quotation from the volume dedicated to the Ottoman peoples is instructive for the whole series, "We know even in this enlightened age, hardly more of the Ottoman empire than its vast extent and local situation. The illusion and errors, which have resulted from faint, distant, superficial and slight inquiries, have with respect to some authors, afforded us only phantoms, which, being looked and acted upon as realities, have been thrust forward as the religion, laws, and manners of the Turks." - preface. The plates in this book conjure the picturesque phantoms of both neighboring peoples such as the Austrians, but also those of more exotic locales across the globe. Book plates of James H. Barr of Cincinnati.
