(Some light offsetting to plates, offsetting to text, some marginal soiling and occasional spotting, affecting the Punishments of China more than other volumes, the Military Costume of Turkey with one text leaf detached). Uniformly bound in contemporary straight-grained red morocco, wide roll-tool borders in gilt and blind, gilt spines, gilt edges (extremities rubbed, corners bumped, some scuff marks to covers). AN ELEGANT SERIES ON EUROPEAN AND ASIATIC COSTUME, in most cases first published by William Miller but reprinted by Thomas McLean c. 1820, without any alteration to the title-pages. Miller's series of six costume books came out in the opening decade of the 19th century, The Costume of China being the first to appear in 1800. Although he brought out the first English edition of The Costume of Austria , this was based on Kininger's edition (Vienna, 1803). McLean added one of his own books to Miller's oeuvre , the Military Costume of Turkey , first printed in 1818. (7)
