Title: Correspondence of letters between Cecil Hopkinson and Col. Otto Probst Author: Hopkinson, Cecil Place: Hants, England & South Bend, Indiana Publisher: Date: 1945-51 Description: With: 3 typed letters signed by Hopkinson on First Edition Bookshop (London) letterhead but typed from Hants, England, dated Oct. & Nov. 1945 & May 1946, all to Probst. Mentions: a golf trophy inkstand from c.1900-10 sold to a friend in Canada, Golf magazines Hopkinson has that maybe Probst would want, also “I shut my business down on the day that war broke out and went back into the Army at the end of 1939…spent…14 months in 1941-42 in West Africa which took years off my life…I never – like you – rose to the rank of Colonel being one rank lower…During the war I got myself a daughter…Now about business…I am dropping out of books altogether and concentrating on music which was always my specialty…I am still going on with my old customers for old and rare books and looking out for their specialties in all my various tours…with all good wishes and kind regards, very sincerely yours, Cecil Hopkinson.” Two at 9x5½; one at 10x7½. * 4 pre-printed postmarked postcards, typed and signed by Cecil Hopkinson, all written from Petersfield, Hants, 1946-1951, discussing various topics: again mentions a golf trophy/inkstand from Canada, Hopkinson’s book being out of print and has no more copies left, mentions Reliquiae Divi Andreae (scarce early history of St. Andrews from 1797) “which to check up the reference to golf in it…”; etc., etc. * And, 4 carbon letters from type written by Col. Probst to Hopkinson, dated May & Oct. 1946, June 1947 & Nov. 1951. Mostly in reply discussing topics related to subjects mentioned above. Together, 11 items. Noted golf book scholar and author, Cecil Hopkinson, best known for his book, Collecting Golf Books 1743-1938: Aspects of Book Collecting (1938); considered by many to be "the first annotated bibliography on the game of golf, Hopkinson collated previously published (but incomplete) bibliographies, to which he added his own bibliographic notations" - Donovan & Jerris H21880. Col. R. Otto Probst (1896-1986), of South Bend, Indiana, is considered one of the great golf book collectors. Also, the Probst Library is one of the world's premier golf collections, showcased in the PGA Historical Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight darkening to postcards; old/original folds to letters; one carbon letter with marginal chips; very good to near fine. Item number: 187210
