COOPER, JAMES FENIMORE. Autograph letter signed ("J. Fenimore Cooper") to "Dear Sir," Cooperstown, March 23 [18]50. One page, 8vo, brown ink on pale blue bond; margins trimmed closely by previous owner (impinging on a few letters on left margin of last line of letter, text elsewise not affected); folded horizontally and vertically; previously pasted onto plain autograph backing page, which adheres to upper right corner of blank verso; the entire trimmed letter is affixed, at the upper left hand corner, to a plain 8½ x 14in. sheet of heavy bond. Cooper prods his publisher, [George Putnam?], about the printing of his upcoming work, The Ways of the Hour , the first edition of which appeared during the second week of April 1850 according to BAL (3935), or roughly three weeks after this letter: "...the book will not be likely to produce competition, until an edition is sold...it ought to be very handsomely printed, as it is addressed altogether to the tasteful and refined!..."
