Bensley for Longman & others, 1807]. 2 volumes in 1, broadsheets. 29 engraved plates by Heath, Parks, Basire and Milton after G. Kirtland, with tissue guards (minor spotting throughout). Modern half morocco, gilt-lettered spine, blue and white boards. Provenance : Western Medical & Surgical Society (presentation inscription "To the Western Medical & Surgical Society from F. Seymour Hartley Oct. 26 1861", stamp on title). FIRST EDITION. "Cooper's contributions to the anatomy of hernia include the discovery of the fascia transversalis, the fascia propria and Cooper's ligament; he also gave the first clear account of the inguinal canal, and an improved description of Camper's fascia" (Norman). Brock commented in 1952 that Cooper's account of strangulated hernia "[could be] read with profit today, and with but a few minor alterations would provide a student with enough knowledge to pass any ordinary examination on the subject".
