COOK, James (1728-1779). "The Method taken for preserving the Health of the Crew of his Majesty's Ship the Resolution during her late Voyage round the World." In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society . Vol. LXVI. Part I. London: W. Bowyer and J. Nichols for Lockyer Davis, 1776. 4 o (223 x 171 mm). 7 folding engraved plates, some woodcut illustrations in text. (Some minor foxing and light dampstaining.) 18th-century half calf, speckled boards (modern calf antique rebacking, preserving early lettering pieces). Reprinting of Cook's famous paper communicated to John Pringle in March 1776 (see lot 378), in which he described the precaustions he took against scurvy, as prescribed by the Admiralty, during his voyage round the world of 1772-75. "These included feeding the sailors with such antiscorbutics as saurkraut, fresh greens and citrus fruits, as suggested by Lind; guarding the sailors from unnecessary exposure and fatigue; and keeping the ship clean, dry and well-aired" (Norman).
