Beschreibung:

COOK, CAPTAIN JAMES - VOYAGES] A uniformly bound set of Cook's Voyages , all of the Voyages in the first edition. Tan calf, edges mottled red, the covers either contemporary or 19th century (except the third volume Atlas, which is in a modern binding with cloth sides), all but that rebacked to style, the spines stamped with a ship motif and gilt lettered, red and green morocco lettering labels. Each volume (excepting the Atlas approximately 11 3/4 x 9 inches (30.3 x 23 cm). Comprising: [FIRST VOYAGE]. HAWKESWORTH, JOHN. An Account of the Voyages... for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere... In the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour. London : W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773. First edition, an early issue without the Straits of Magellan plate and the Preface, the second two volumes numbered sequentially, and with the errata leaf and textual errors, thus one of 2,000 sets printed (and almost immediately sold-out). Three volumes. 51 plates and maps (several folding or double-page on stubs). This set does have the plate list present, sometimes found in the first edition. Some spine labels defective, externally sound, internally a clean set, although with some degree of offsetting from text to some of the plates; [SECOND VOYAGE]. COOK, JAMES, CAPT. A Voyage Towards the South Pole, and Round the World. Performed in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Adventure, In the Years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1777. First edition. Two volumes. Portrait frontispiece and 63 plates and charts (several folding or double-page on stubs). Some spine labels defective. Generally a very clean set, occasional minor offsetting, plate 62 with a separation at the fold (possibly inserted from another copy?), one leaf with a neatly restored tear; [THIRD VOYAGE]. A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean. Undertaken, by the command of His Majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. To determine The Position and Extent of the West Side of North America; its Distance from Asia; and the Practicability of a Northern Passage to Europe... London: W. & A. Strahan for G. Nicol ... and T. Cadell, 1785. First edition. Four volumes, the text with 24 plates and charts as called for, the Atlas 20 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches (52.5 x 37.5 cm), with two large folding maps and 61 plates; additionally, a facsimile of the Straits of Magellan plate from the First Voyage is bound in. Some labels defective, very light spotting and offsetting, clean overall. The title of the Third Voyage bears the neat ownership inscription of Elizabeth Bacon. Sets of Cook with all the Voyages in the first edition are comparatively rare. Despite the high cost, the first editions sold out within days of publication. See Hill 782, 358, 361; Holmes 5, 24, 47; Mitchell Library Cook 648, 1216, 1552; Sabin 30934, 16245, 16250. C
