COOK, Captain James (1728-79). A new, authentic, and complete edition of Captain Cook's first, second, third and last voyages round the world ... an entire new edition, taken from the original journals as published in quarto by government, at a most extravagant price. The whole now revised, corrected and improved, and published on reasonable terms, by Capt. John Hogg . London : printed for Alex. Hogg, at the King's-Arms, No. 16, Paternoster-Row, [1790?]. 4 volumes, 8°-in-4s (208 x 124mm). Leaf with directions to the binder, 16pp. subscribers' list and 16pp. of publisher's ads bound at end of vol. IV. Two folding engraved maps and 118 plates. (Folding maps lightly spotted, the world map trimmed into title, lightly creased with two short tears without loss, edges light frayed, two plates with marginal ink stains, one plate with marginal chip, light browning throughout, affecting gathering 5B in vol. II more heavily.) Contemporary tree calf, flat spines with gilt red morocco spine labels (extremities rubbed, corners and joints more heavily, headcap to vol. I and tailcap to vol. II defective, joints splitting to vol. III). Provenance : Abraham Heraud (SUBSCRIBER'S ink ownership inscription to front free endpapers and to printed subscribers' list) -- Edward Poulson (pencil ownership inscriptions dated 1905 and 1906) -- Ada ?Dyce Murphy (ink inscription to vol. I 'Bought in ?Folkestone Sept 1916 ... and sent to Australia'). SUBSCRIBER'S VERY RARE OCTAVO EDITION OF COOK'S VOYAGES. The present work's first owner was most probably James Abraham Heraud (d. 1846), father of the writer and poet John Abraham Heraud (1799-1887). A law stationer of Huguenot descent, James Abraham Heraud compiled handbooks on the stamp laws in 1798, 1801, and 1824. At the end of the subscribers' list, the publisher writes that he omitted a tenth of the subscribers' names from the printed list, which explains Heraud's manuscript addition. ESTC RECORDS ONLY TWO COMPLETE COPIES: National Library of Ireland and Boston Athenaeum. A third, at St. John's University, NY, has vol. IV only.
