Half-titles, 66 engraved charts and plates (after William Hodges , most folding (numbered 1-65 and 10 bis), one letterpress folding table. Vol.V with one letterpress folding table and one engraved folding map. Nearly uniformly bound in contemporary mottled calf gilt, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt, brown morocco lettering-pieces in 2 (some light wear). Provenance : M. Fournier de Clusine, Ingénieur (bookplate on pastedown); Camille and Emilie De Langau (manuscript bookplate on pastedown vol.V). FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, Antoine Suard’s translation of A Voyage to the South Pole and round the World , first published in 1777. Suard used both Cook’s account as well as Forster’s in the first four volumes of his translation, separating Forster’s content with inverted commas in the dovetailed account. The fifth volume, Observations by Johann Reinhold Forster, was published separately from Cook’s in the English edition and forms an appendix to vols.I-IV, omitting any repetitive material.
