Continental CongressThe Constitutions of Several Independent States of America; The Declaration of Independence; The Articles of Confederation Between the Said States; the Treaties Between His Most Christian Majesty and the United States of America. The Second edition. Published originally by Order of Congress. Boston: Printed by Norman and Bowen, 1785 8vo (168 x 102 mm). Aa1 stained with lower creased corner so printed. Contemporary brown paste-paper boards, sheep spine with raised bands; boards a trifle scuffed. The work includes the charter of Rhode Island and the constitutions of eleven states (Connecticut didn't adopt a constitution until 1818, see lots 12 and 99). It also contains printings of the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance with France (1778), the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the Netherlands (1782); the Treaty of Peace (1783). An interesting association copy signed and annotated by Dr. Daniel Rose (1772–1833) who practiced medicine in Maine and became active in the movement to separate Maine from Massachusetts. Rose was a delegate to the Maine Constitutional Convention from October 1819 to January 1820, in which he unsuccessfully led the opposition to the creation of an Executive Council. When Maine became a state in 1820, Rose was elected to the State Senate where he remained until 1825, the last two years serving as its president. He became the first warden of the Maine State Prison at Thomaston, which served as a penitentiary where convicts were sentenced to hard labor for life or for any terms of time not less than one year and where they were nightly lowered into subterranean granite cells.
