George Francis Stewart, fourth son of the 2nd Earl of Minto, barrister and Private Secretary to Lord John Russell brother of Sir Henry George Elliot diplomat, 1817-1907, 1822-1901) Collection of diaries and journals including visits on the Continent, 19 vol. and a few loose pp., autograph manuscripts, numerous pp., slightly browned, various cloth and leather bindings, sm. 4to et infra, 1847-90 (c. 19). ⁂ Lively, well written and penetrating political insights in the journals of a Victorian diplomat. Travels to Scotland, Switzerland, Italy and Constantinople; political events including with Lord John Russell and the Aberdeen Ministry, Lord John Russell's mission to Vienna, death of Lady Harriet Elliot in Paris, Lord Salisbury's mission to Constantinople, Crimean War etc. Lord Salisbury in Constantinople at the Conference of the Powers. "Ld. S[alisbury] has said more than once that H[enry Elliot] has been the victim of a Prime Minister who did not read despatches - & on all occasions he speaks slightingly of his chief [Disraeli]. Lord S. is intensely anxious for the succession of the mission & wd. do anythg for that end - they think they can coerce the Turk into anything - it is a very dangerous game in which our own interests may be sacrificed - Ld. S. thinks & says he has gained a great diplomatic victory over Genl. Ig[natieff]. The victory seems to me on the other side - For a Russian occupation has been substituted [for] a Body Guard of some thousands of Belgians... ." - Elliot.
