Conrad, Joseph and Ford Madox Hueffer THE INHERITORS. AN EXTRAVAGANT STORY. LONDON: WILLIAM HEINEMANN, 1901 8vo, first English edition, first issue without dedication, revealingly inscribed by Ford Madox Hueffer(see note), publisher’s catalogue at rear, original pictorial yellow cloth (Cagle’s “a” binding), morocco-backed slipcase and chemise The inscription reads "The assignment of what in this book is Conrad's and what is mine will be found in my ‘Joseph Conrad’ pp. 118-119 et seq. Conrad wrote in another copy of this edition: 'There is very little of my actual writing in this work. Discussion there has been in plenty. F.M.H. held the pen.' - and that is about correct. Ford Madox Ford (F.M. Hueffer) New York Dec. MCMXXVI". The novelist and man of letters Madox Ford, also known as Ford Madox Hueffer, was Conrad's closest literary friend and collaborator between 1898 and 1909 (see Part I, lot 35).
