Beschreibung:

Lot of 4, including ninth plate ambrotype bust view of John J. Burroughs, plus 3 post-war views. John “Captain Jack” J. Burroughs, born April 22, 1841 in Norfolk, Virginia and attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and became a lawyer. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Burroughs enlisted as a Private in the 6th Virginia Infantry on April 19, 1861 in Norfolk, Virginia, and was later promoted to Corporal. Later in the war, he served in the 34th Tennessee Infantry and was a Sergeant, 2nd Lieutenant, and most probably Captain under his half-brother Captain William H. Burroughs in the “Rhett Artillery” (Captain Burroughs’ Company), Tennessee Light Artillery. Burroughs’ Confederate military service is unusual in that he served both in the Army on Northern Virginia and the Army of Mississippi. These interesting images should provide much more research opportunities.
