Confederate Dead Letter Image Collection

Beschreibung:

Lot of 6 cased, Civil War-era Confederate "dead letter" ambrotypes, including 3 ninth plate and 3 sixth plate portraits of men and women. Interestingly, most of them have some tinting and details enhanced - one with gilt buttons, others with cheek tinting, one with nearly full color. Each image was mailed in an envelope addressed to a recipient in the south, which went unclaimed. Recipients include "Mrs. M.J. Butler, Clarksville, Tenn.," and forty cents postage was paid on this mailing. A Mr. "W.H. Pascoe, Esq., Vicksburg, Miss." was to receive two different photographs, one an image of a lovely young woman in a pink and blue dress, the other is of another woman, but there has been some emulsion damage so it is not as clear as the first image. "Mr. James Wright of Mobile, Ala." was sent an image of a young woman, as well. The address for each mailing was cut from the envelope and pasted to the cover of each case so they could possibly be claimed. Some had postage paid, others, postage due. Each of these images went unclaimed and ended up at a dead letter auction some long time ago.
