Beschreibung:

CONCHOLOGY An album of original watercolours of shells, [circa 1870], 201 x 130mm., approximately 1394 original pen, ink and watercolour drawings of shells on 161 leaves, each numbered beneath with list on facing page identifying each shell using scientific nomenclature. Contemporary black roan (spine lacking). Provenance : inscription 'Easter 1929', by an unidentified hand. A FINE COMPILATION by an unidentified hand. The high quality watercolours are accompanied by binominal identifications of each subject (occasionally incorrect e.g. Pyrena instead of Pyrene , menstralis instead of menstrualis , etc.). In addition many of the entries include their original discoverers and their country of origin: showing that the collection includes examples of shells worldwide. The album forms part of a tradition in which gifted amateurs pursued their interests in the natural world with a zeal and ability that is rarely found today. The explosion in interest in shells and their correct classification began in the late-18th century, stimulated, to a degree, by the beautiful examples bought back by the various Pacific voyagers. Exhibitions and printed works, by authors such as Thomas Martyn ( The Universal Conchologist , 1784-1792), Captain Thomas Brown Emanuel Mendes da Costa, John Mawe, George Pery, Lovell Augustus Reeve, George Brettingham Sowerby, William Swainson William Wood and others, kept interest in conchology alive and the present album is a fine example of the work of a late 19th-century collector, clearly able to convey their fascination with the beauty and intricacy of shells.
