COMTE AUDOIN DE DAMPIERRE CHENEY Counts from the Dampierre family have lived in Chenay for over 700 years. Champagne production started as late as in 1880, and the house, run by this Count, is one of the newest in Champagne. He lives, together with his wife and dogs, in the lovely mansion in this charming village. Count Audoin has no vineyards of his own but instead buys in all his grapes from Premier and Grand cru villages. They are vinified in Avize, where they are stored for at least four years. I've had the impression that the champagne production is a passionate hobby for the Count. He loves good champagne and classic cars, and the connection between these outwardly separate things is something he exploits regularly. He has produced a champagne set for Aston Martin and usually poses in front of his house with his private collection of sports cars and a glass of champagne in his hand. I'll never forget a ride in his black 1935 Alvis. Audoin makes me think of Roger Moore in the old TV series "The Persuaders". Luckily the feeling of frivolity and luxury is not just an image. His champagnes are wines worthy of counts and barons with their aristocratic style. And the Count himself is one of the most charismatic and light-hearted of people in all of Champagne.
