[just after 1914?]. 12 x 19 in., clean tear at left-hand edge (repairable), otherwise in good condition. Signed in broad lower margin in ink by 14 individuals. THE BIRTH OF ASCAP. A fascinating relic of the "Tin-Pan Alley" era which saw the founding of the first performing rights organization, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, established in New York on 13 February 1914. The sepia-toned photograph shows 14 influential composers, musicians and song-writers (some of them founding members of ASCAP) standing around a grand piano (the composer Rudolf Friml at the keyboard). Signatories, from left to right include: JEROME D. KERN (1885-1945) LOUIS A. HIRSCH (1887-1924, influential Broadway songwriter), A. BALDWIN SLOANE (1872-1925, wrote 1902 musical The Wizard of Oz ), REGINALD HAMMERSTEIN (1897-1958), RUDOLPH FRIML (1884-1972), ALFRED G. ROBYN (1860-1935), GUSTAV KERKER, unidentified, JOHN PHILIP SOUSA (1854-1932, the great band composer), LESLIE STUART (1862-1977), RAYMOND HUBBELL, (1879-1954), JOHN L. GOLDEN (1874-1955), SILVIO HEIN and IRVING BERLIN (1888-1989). The very early date of this striking group photo is underlined by the amazingly youthful appearance of Kern and Berlin (both men were in their twenties in 1914).
