Contemporary half sheep over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments with a single gilt decoration, orange glazed-paper lettering-piece. Condition : gatherings A and B bound in reverse, occasional light soiling or browning; binding rubbed, label scraped, small repairs to head of spine. attractive early 19th century edition of comenius’s revolutionary school book , apparently the first edition edited by Josef Chmela (1793-1847); here with the text in 5 languages: Latin, German, French, Polish and Czech. Impressively, this landmark work was still going strong over 170 years after it was originally published (in German & Latin) in the middle of the seventeenth century. Pilz 180.
