Christophorus Columbus de prima insularum, in mari Indico sitarum, lustratione, quae sub rege Ferdinando Hispaniarum facta est. Basel: Heinrich Petri, August 1533. Chancery folio, 293 x 196 mm. (11½ x 7 5/8 in.), modern boards covered in a bifolium from a 15th-century manuscript missal, somewhat rubbed, lower blank portion of title-leaf soiled and with small tears, small closed tear to S1, mostly marginal dampstaining, soiling to last few leaves . FIRST EDITION in part, 9-line and smaller historiated woodcut initials, woodcut printer's device on verso of final leaf (recto blank). Adams R-613; Alden 533/6; Church I,66; Sabin 72023. The fourth of the seven texts in this collection is a reprint of Columbus's letter to Rafael Sanchez in Cosco's Latin translation (pp. 116-121). "This is the edition from which most early writers quote" (Church). Provenance : Jovinius David Pamelius, neat sixteenth-cetnury signature on title and scattered marginalia -- Blind type impression (large capitals) to lower blank portion of title -- Otto Orren Fisher, bookplate.
