Significant collection of rare booklets on the Suez Canal, which was largely the brainchild of Ferdinand de Lesseps. The earliest of the booklets, Lesseps’ letter to the London Times in 1855, dates from the beginning of his efforts. Actual ground was broken on 1859, and construction lasted for ten years. Fifteen of the booklets date from the period of construction, as engineering, political, social and economic challenges were successfully, if not easily, dealt with. Lot Amendments Condition: Most with rubberstamps of the Franklin Institute Library, some other markings, several with labels affixed, a few with pencil ownership signatures of Prof. J.E.
