COLLECTION OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR CORRESPONDENCE TO JOHN HANCOCK 28 items (ALS, LS, DS), approx. 45 pages recto and verso, legal folio, quarto and octavo, various places including Boston, Philadelphia, and Rutland, April 26, 1776 to September 17, 1782, most to John Hancock 19 with Hancock's docket on the verso, condition varies from good to poor (many leaves separated at horizontal folds, toning overall), an intriguing collection. This collection of correspondence written to Hancock during the years he served as a member and President of the Continental Congress, and also as Governor of Massachusetts, includes letters of HENRY MITCHELL, ABRAHAM SKINNER, CAPT. DANIEL CLAP, MAJOR L. PETTINGILL, JOHNATHAN TITCOMB, ADMIRAL MONTAGUE, SAMUEL HOLTON, AMOS LINCOLN, BENJAMIN HITCHHOUSE, ROBERT HARRISON JOHN BRADFORD, RICHARD HUSTON, LEVI LINCOLN, JOHN CATHCART, THOMAS POLLARD, and GEORGE PARTRIDGE. Of particular interest are 8 ALSs of John Bradford, written between June 16 and September 16, 1776 to Hancock in Philadelphia, regarding the movements of ships in the American fleet. From June 17: "... David Spear Reports that the Ship & Brig have 200 Soldiers on board, our privateers (five in number) engaged them the greatest part of yesterday at sea, but could not conquer them, they all left them, finding the transports aim'd to get into Boston, precautions were taken below (as thier happen'd to be a Commr at the Light House Island) not to suffer any boats to go out, the vessells ran in the first of the Evg and was follow'd by our Cruisers when another smart engagement took place. They defended themselves till their major was Shot Dead ... Their Colonel & the officers are now on this passage up to town. We had only four men wounded, what number they've lost I know not.
