Title: Collection of over 40 letters to or about Eugene Field, plus a small archive of ephemera Author: ** Place: Various places Publisher: Date: 1888-1895 Description: Collection of 46 letters includes 34 ALs, 10 TLs, 2 TL, 1 original photograph of Eugene Field and company mounted to board, and 20 ephemeral items such as an original pencil drawing of Field by Dan E. O'Sullivan, 2 collector's receipts from the Royal League, brochures for Eugene Field Night and other appearances by him, and a color poster "Eugene Field Monument Souvenir," 13x17. The entire collection merits viewing in person, but some notables include: 2-page ALs from Field's cousin, M.F. French to him. * 3-page ALs from a child named Beatrix Hawthorne, presumably a fan, to Field, complete in it's original envelope which measures 2x2¾. * 1-page ALs from the Supervisor of the Dog Pound for the Dept. of Police of Chicago, dated Jany 6th, 1892 when Eugene lost his dog. * Two 1-page ALs from J.W. Matthews, apparently an aspiring poet, as he refers to poetry submissions he had made to Field. Each letter dated 1889. * 2-page ALs from Congressman John J. Ingalls to Field regarding a desire to meet. Dated May 31, 1891. * Also included is Also includes a eulogy for the deceased Eugene Field, dated November 4th, 1895, cover page + 2-page hand-written poem, signed (Rev) J.P. Hutchinson. This collection includes a correspondence to and about Field from his circle of family, friends, acquaintances, fans, and a few letters from officials regarding money matters or otherwise. Many of the letters are from fans of all ages and places, and include praise for his work, requests for copies of his books, and his signature. Lot Amendments Condition: About half of the letters are mounted along one edge to stiff backing; souvenir poster is quite delicate with long closed tears along creases; edge wear to many, generally light; overall very good.
