Collection of autograph letters and cards signed by prominent late nineteenth-early twentieth century writers, scholars and actors; highlights including letters from Scottish archaeologist Alexander Stuart Murray ("It is generally understood that the number of coronae aureae in the cases you refer to in Livy represents the number of towns captured by the victorious generals...I do not recollect any instance of a Greek bronze being gilded, though the process of gilding was generally practised by the Greek"; London, 11 November, 1886); Walter de LaMare (typed letter thanking the recipient for replacing him at a lecture he was not able to attend because he "was idling his time away in bed -though shingles is not the pleasantest form of idleness I know"; Hill House, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, 25 March, 1929); Secretary of State for Foreign affairs George Curzon; Scot poet and literary critic Andrew Lang; David Binning Monro (discussing some linguistic matters like the original meaning of the genitive and the source of the Indo-germanic language; Oriel College, Oxford, 3 July 1896); classical scholar Richard Claverhouse Jebb (saying he will try to produce some Greek verses to "accompany the address from the Hellenic Society on the occasion of the Bodleian festival"; House of Commons Library, 14 May, 1902); Samuel Gardiner, Edwin Ray Lankester, Canon of Westminster Hubert Hensley Henson, actress Madge Kendal Grimston and his husband William; c.1880s-1930s.
