Beschreibung:

Colin Campbell Cooper American, 1856-1937 West Side, New York, 1908 Signed Colin Campbell Cooper and dated 1908 (lr); titled on a label affixed to the verso Gouache, graphite and colored pencil, and pastel on paper laid to board 30 x 22 inches Although identified by the artist as West Side New York, this vibrant view of Manhattan, painted during an election year, appears to depict a curving, busy thoroughfare wending its way in the general direction of the Williamsburg bridge. In a foreground dominated by brownstones and an elevated train, a throng of bystanders regards a delivery made by horse and carriage. In the middle distance, where the buildings are much taller, a campaign banner for presidential candidate William Howard Taft traverses the busy street. Colin Campbell Cooper was a master at rendering the smoke and steam of a dynamic city; here he captures the excitement of a campaign year in vivid hues of pink, vermilion and ochre, interspersed with blue and gray. C Estate of Eve G. Kingsland
Slight wear around the edges. There is a small tear about four inches from the lower left corner with a 2 inch horizontal area bent upward. The extreme lower left corner is worn away. The main body of the composition remains fresh and vibrant. The label on the reverse bears the artist's Santa Barbara address.
