COHEN DE LARA, David, son of Isaac (1602-1674). Tratado del temor divino, extracto del doctissimo libro llamado Resssit hohmá . Amsterdam: Menasseh ben Israel 5393 [1633]. 4° (177 x 136mm). Hebrew and roman types. Woodcut title border incorporating a pelican-in-her-piety. (Without final blank, some soiling and small stains, one tear into text without loss, one tear affecting a few letters, a little marginal worming.) 19th-century vellum-backed marbled boards (lightly rubbed). Provenance : Abraham Ferro th-century ownership inscriptions). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION IN SPANISH of Ressit Hohma by R. Eliyahu de Vidas. Rabbi Cohen de Lara undertook its translation for the benefit of the Marranos, Jews living among Christians who had lost, or were in danger of losing, knowledge of their own, particularly Sephardic, traditions. Part of their loss was linguistic, necessitating a translation from Hebrew into the vernacular. The work is dedicated to David, alias Duarte de Lima (d.1660), a rich Sephardi merchant of Hamburg and a founder of the Hamburger Bank in 1619. It also contains a sonnet in praise of the author by Josseph Frances (d.1681), a renowned Sephardi poet of the Hamburg congregation. Palau 56254; Boer, Spanish and Portuguese Printing, 809.
