Cockburn--Vintage 1881 A hand blown dark green-amber sealed bottle of upright form with slightly tapered sides, heavy string lip and glass seal applied to the centre side of the bottle with the initial R surmounted by a crown. On the opposite side, the remains of a label 'Cockburn's ..81', with a very crisply embossed wax capsule with PORT in the centre and the name of the wine merchant bottler around the circumference: Snow & Co EXETER. Very good level, into neck It is believed that the initial on the seal is of Henry Roll of Devon Clinton though what appears to be a Ducal crown is confusing. Although it was common practice for English families of note in the 17th and 18th centuries to have, and continually to re-use, their own sealed bottles, it is unusual for them to be continued to be used for wines of the late-Victorian period. However, the combination of old sealed bottle and Cockburn's port of a rare declared 19th-century vintage with good level, makes this a particularly interesting item 1 sealed bottle per lot
